It is interesting that the background image on the box above is the only image I have ever found of a Ausf N that had spaced armor on the gun mantle. Something I read recently led me to believe that the short 75mm gun was so heavy that the additional armor was impractical. So is the picture a anomaly?
I plan to tie the Pz. III project to three other projects and build a unit of vehicles and men. At the left are the other three vehicles. The 250/3 is a model that I no longer have, but I have two Armor Hobby kits and I plan to build a new radio vehicle. The 222 armored car is a Panzer Juan vehicle that is in my possession and needs correcting, detailing, painting and weathering. Both of these projects were already on my project list and along with they tank would have been completed sometime in 2014, though not necessarily together. I guess I should add that this project has jumped to the top of my list because it is one that I am highly interested in right now and it takes care of three projects at the same time. The schwimmwagen below was a 21st Century Toys model that had been modified, but it is no longer in my possession. I will be replacing it with a Dragon pre-built schwimmer that is available to me. I will also be finishing it as a radio vehicle as this one was, though I will be using the Dragon radio set model kit for the radio.
At left are my WIP figures thus far. The first picture is my crew for the Pz. III. I realize that a Pz III have five crewmen, but only three will be visible, so that is what I am doing. You can see here my pea dot/black uniform combination. I really would like to get another black tunic because I really like that combination with the camo pants. I have one, but I converted it and am less that happy with it.
The second picture shows three of my infantry figures, the officer in the center and the non-com on left. It is hard to tell in the photo but there are three different examples of camo smock here. The officer is wearing the "palm" camo that was fairly plentiful in Russia. I have three of these and have ordered a couple more.
Three more of my infantry men, the soldier on the right is wearing the '43 two piece pea-dot drill. Both he and the soldier on the left are equipped with the G-43 semi automatic rifle. The soldier in the center is carrying the Kar 98K. Note, the soldier on right is also the only one in my unit with short boots and cloth gaiters. I would like to have another set of these.
Three more infantry soldiers. The soldier on right carries the MG34 squad machine gun. His smock is a blurred pattern. This figure is a little more muscular than most of the Dragons I am using and I am not particularly happy with the look, may change it out. The figure in center is wearing the palm patterned smock and has not been equipped yet.
Well, that's the overview of the project. Would love to have some comments and suggestions. Please feel free to leave comments. You do not need to be a member of the site to do so, I believe the only thing necessary is a screen name. - PM
