The Western Project for the Ft. Thomas show continues to make progress, today I look at HORSES...
There are Seventeen of the twenty horses and two mules that will be featured on our diorama in this shot. About half of these have had modifications to legs and/or heads before any cleanup was done. One pour mere had to have an ear replaced. Most required cleanup with Dremel tool and sandpaper/steel wool before any painting could be done.
...The saddles are all handmade from scratch, primarily from leather. The saddle on Gray Ghost's horse at right is a Confederate Jennifer saddle that I made some time ago. I have found that this is an easy saddle to do and when a figure is on the horse, it is close enough to the look of a McClellan that most folks don't know it isn't one. I prefer the older Cavalry saddles with a full "fender" on the side, rather than the later 1870's saddles that only had the strap- that's just my personal preference
That is all on horses now. I will update when we have them saddled. Next time, I plan to talk a little bit about what Gray Ghost has been up to - making town buildings. - PM
